Al Jama-ah Affirms Stance on 570 Objections Received by the IEC

PRESS RELEASE

NO EMBARGO

2 June 2024

Al Jama-ah reiterates its call upon the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to address the 570 objections received with utmost transparency and diligence.

In line with our unwavering commitment to upholding democratic values, Al Jama-ah emphasizes the paramount importance of ensuring that the electoral processes are conducted freely, fairly, and credibly.

To this end, we urge the IEC to engage in thorough scrutiny of all objections, ensuring that every legitimate concern is addressed comprehensively. It is imperative that the electoral process remains transparent and inclusive, with all stakeholders having full confidence in its integrity.

In pursuit of transparency and accountability, Al Jama-ah proposes that the IEC conduct a public recount, with representatives from various political parties acting as observers. This measure will not only enhance the transparency of the electoral process but also serve to instill public trust in the outcome.

Al Jama-ah firmly believes that a recount is essential to safeguarding the credibility of the election results. By undertaking this proactive step, the IEC can demonstrate its unwavering commitment to upholding democratic principles and ensuring the integrity of the electoral process.

As the custodian of democracy, it is incumbent upon the IEC to uphold the highest standards of transparency, fairness, and accountability. Al Jama-ah remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting measures that strengthen the democratic fabric of our nation.

Following the recent development in the city of Johannesburg mid 2019, when the government of local unity (GLU) removed the Democratic Alliance (DA) from government in the City of Johannesburg. Al Jama-ah occupied a position of section 79 oversight committee on governance. The committee does oversight on the office of the executive mayor and that of the city manager. This position was occupied by its sole councilor at the time, his name is Thapelo Amad.

Towards the end of the year, in 2019, during the fall out of the Patriotic Alliance (PA) and the African National Congress (ANC), the GLU was threatened by collapse. At the time, Al Jama-ah had just won Lenasia ward 9 from the DA. And Councilor Thapelo Amad was appointed onto the mayoral committee by the then executive mayor cllr. Geoff Makhubo – to oversee the Department of development & planning, and the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA).

Al Jama- ah has successfully made its mark in government. We’ve ascended into the livers of government, and entered the Land question debate. We have demonstrated our ability to govern and transform the lives of the historically marginalized. We have successfully tabled reports and pushed forward two Mega Land projects: the Southern Farm and the Lanseria Mega project, that seeks to open the corridors of economy, and address the historical injustices of the spatial planning in the city of Johannesburg. The previously marginalized communities are placed in the peripheries in the North and South of Johannesburg.

The development will cater to a mixed use of the infrastructure and will resuscitate the broken economy. It will also create the agility to integrate the society, turn the city into a construction site and bring industries closer to people, with that we advocate for the principle of Batho Pele, which means People first.

During the period of the covid 19 pandemic, Al Jama-ah embraced the notion of the “New Normal” and launched the online system called Construction Permit Management System (CPMS) within the department of development planning. The aim was to make the business of doing business easier, enabling the online application of building plans, approvals, illuminating queues and alleged corruption of city officials. We’ve opened  the department to communities, through partnerships and stakeholder engagement, and as a result many lives were transformed, SMME’s were empowered and given the all persons equal opportunity to build. Aspirant high school children were empowered through the I AM THE FUTURE initiative that was championed by cllr Amad.

The above is the clear demonstration of Al Jama-ah as a trusted political party in South Africa, trusted by other political parties and the society at large. The DA did not have full confidence in its own partners, but had full confidence in Al Jama-ah, so to the ANC and many more political parties. We’re growing as a political party that represents all communities. With unwavering support from both our Muslim community and people out of Islamic faith.

The block enjoyed the sideline support of the EFF (Economic Freedom Fighters) and the ANC. Together we overthrew the MPG. Al Jama-ah made history in the city of Johannesburg, one of the first minority parties in the country, the to hold a position of government, in the mayoral chain.

Al Jama-ah has three councilors in the city, Kabelo Gwamanda, the current executive Mayor of Johannesburg, Thapelo Amad, the former executive mayor of Johannesburg and current chairperson of the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) Gauteng, and lastly the beloved ward councilor of ward 9 Johannesburg. Cllr Imran Moosa, who is a chairperson of the Section 79 oversight committee on Environment Infrastructure and Services Department (EISD).

The succession plan of the GLU from councilor Thapelo Amad to councilor Kabelo Gwamanda ensured a smooth transition of government and continuity of services, it is also shows that Al Jama-ah is capable of leading the biggest city in Africa, with the net worth of R83 billion and 6 million residents entrusted to Al Jama-ah.

This is the beginning of the Al Jama-ah story. Our story in the city of Johannesburg. The second Al Jama-ah administration is now underway, under the stewardship of Executive Mayor Cllr Kabelo Gwamada.

A Call to Action in the Face of Palestinian Struggle

A Call to Action in the Face of Palestinian Struggle

Introduction

The ongoing conflict in Palestine has stirred emotions and passions across the Muslim world. As the world watches the suffering of the Palestinian people, it’s imperative for the Ummah, the global Muslim community, to unite in solidarity. This is not only a moral duty but also a practical necessity to address the complex challenges posed by the conflict and the broader issue of Zionism.

The Palestinian Struggle

For decades, Palestinians have been living under the weight of a complex and often violent conflict with Israel. Their struggle for self-determination, human rights, and freedom from occupation is a cause that resonates deeply with Muslims worldwide. The situation is made more complicated by the expansionist policies of the Israeli government and its settlements in the occupied territories.

The Role of Zionism

Zionism, the ideology that supports the establishment and maintenance of a Jewish state in historical Palestine, has been at the heart of this conflict. While it’s important to distinguish between Zionism as a political ideology and Jewish people as a whole, the actions of some Zionist organisations and the Israeli government have been a source of concern for many in the Ummah. Critics argue that these actions have led to the displacement of Palestinian communities and created a humanitarian crisis.

The Power of Unity

The Ummah is a diverse and widespread community, encompassing people from all walks of life and various cultures. To address the challenges posed by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and Zionism, unity is essential.
Here’s why:

1. Strength in Numbers:
The Ummah represents more than a billion people worldwide. By uniting in support of the Palestinian cause, they can leverage their collective influence to raise awareness, advocate for change, and exert diplomatic pressure on nations and organisations with influence in the region.

2. Moral Duty:
Supporting the Palestinian people is not only a matter of political significance but also a moral obligation for Muslims. The Quran emphasises the importance of justice and compassion for those suffering, and this obligation extends to the people of Palestine.

3. Humanitarian Aid:
Unity within the Ummah can facilitate coordinated humanitarian efforts to provide aid and assistance to the Palestinian people. This includes medical supplies, food, and support for those affected by conflict and displacement.

4. Strengthening International Solidarity:
A united Ummah can foster stronger connections with individuals and organisations around the world who also support the Palestinian cause. Solidarity across borders can amplify the impact of advocacy efforts.

5. Raising Awareness:
By coming together and sharing information about the situation in Palestine, Muslims can help counter misinformation and ensure the world is aware of the realities on the ground.

Peaceful Advocacy

While unity in the Ummah is vital, it’s crucial to emphasise that advocacy for the Palestinian cause should be peaceful, lawful, and respectful of the rights and beliefs of all parties involved. Encouraging dialogue and promoting a peaceful resolution to the conflict is essential. The goal should be to seek justice, peace, and self-determination for the Palestinian people, rather than promoting division or hatred.

Conclusion

The suffering in Palestine is a source of pain and concern for Muslims worldwide. To address this issue effectively, unity within the Ummah is essential. A united front can leverage its collective influence to raise awareness, provide humanitarian aid, and advocate for justice. However, it’s essential to emphasise peaceful and constructive advocacy that promotes dialogue and co-operation. In this critical moment, the Ummah can play a pivotal role in advancing the cause of peace and justice in Palestine.
