AL JAMA-AH’s President leads South African delegation at International conference on reviewing drug legislation on synthetic drugs:

Al Jama-ah Party’s President, Hon Ganief Hendricks, in his capacity as Deputy Minister of Social Development, is currently leading a four-person South African delegation at the International Conference in Vienna on the reviewing of drug legislation on synthetic drugs.

The two-day conference which is organised by the United Nation’s on Drugs
and Crime aims to settle legislation on the prevention, treatment and access to drugs. In his presentation, Hendricks alerted the Conference that children head up organised crime after inheriting drug empires and being the ‘shooters in drug wars.

“Although there have been children jailed for such criminal activities, we believe
that these children should not be send to jail which is in compliance with international law and recommended legislation,” Hendricks said. His statement on behalf of South Africa to more than 100 counties, was received with wide applause singling out President Cyril Ramaphosa’s insistence on evidence-based interventions.

He emphasised that South Africa does not incarcerate children in conflict with the law for the possession of drugs; it refers them to diversion programmes tailored to the offences committed in accordance with the Child Justice Act.

Hendricks has the Ministerial delegation for drugs and substance abuse in the country following decades of work on the ground for interventions to deal with drug use, treatment and the prevention thereof.
