FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Al Jama-ah Welcomes the Adoption of the 2025/2026 Umdoni Municipality Budget

Al Jama-ah in the Umdoni Municipality proudly welcomes the adoption of the 2025/2026 municipal budget—a people-centered financial plan that promises to bring real, tangible change to the lives of our communities.

This is not just another budget—it is a declaration of intent to rebuild, to invest in dignity, and to prioritise service delivery where it matters most. Al Jama-ah supported this budget because it reflects the aspirations of the people of Umdoni. It was not crafted in isolation, but shaped through extensive public participation and genuine community engagement.

We commend the Mayor and the administration for their inclusive approach, especially in addressing community concerns such as the proposed hike in refuse removal fees. The fact that these concerns were heard and the increase moderated shows that we have leadership that listens and leads with compassion.

With over R80 million allocated in capital expenditure, this budget sets out a bold plan:

  • R26 million will go towards rehabilitating road infrastructure.
  • R3 million is committed to improved refuse management with new skips.
  • Investments will be made in beaches, parks, safety equipment, and other critical services.

This is not a budget of bureaucracy—it is a budget of delivery. Despite a challenging economic climate, the budget also shows improved fiscal discipline, with the projected deficit reduced from R49.3 million to R45.9 million.

We further welcome the progressive incentive now available to ratepayers in arrears—allowing them to settle their debt at up to 50% of the total amount owed. This initiative provides a realistic and compassionate path toward financial recovery for struggling households and ensures the municipality can strengthen its revenue base without punitive measures.

However, it is deeply disappointing that the Democratic Alliance (DA) chose to reject this progressive, service-driven budget. Their refusal is not just an attack on the budget—it is an insult to every community left behind by their politicking. They had every opportunity to contribute constructively during the public consultations. Instead, they chose grandstanding over governance.

Al Jama-ah calls out the DA for placing political expediency above the needs of the people. At a time when our communities are crying out for roads, refuse removal, infrastructure, and basic dignity—the DA has chosen obstruction over solutions.

We urge all councillors and members of the public to reflect on who truly stands for development and progress in this municipality. Al Jama-ah will continue to support efforts that place people first and reject narrow political gamesmanship that only deepens the suffering of the poor and marginalised.

Let it be known: Al Jama-ah stands for change, for service, and for the people of Umdoni.
