ABOUT CLLR SHAMEEMAH SALIE

Advocate Shameemah Salie is the youngest of 6 children. She is married and has 5 children.
She attended Portland’s Primary and Jamaica Primary and Woodlands Senior Secondary. Has a B.Proc Degree from the University of the Western Cape (1998), and a Bachelor of Laws Degree from the University of Western Cape (20024).

Shameemah is passionate about the welfare of the most vulnerable members of our communities, including the elderly. She has, from the onset of her career, focused on matters impacting women and children, including on sexual violence victim empowerment and support.

She was a public servant for many years, and her repertoire includes service as a Family Advocate in the Department of Justice, and State advocate in the National Prosecuting Authority until 2015, at which time she joined Al Jama-ah on a full-time basis.  This is when her focus became fully on serving the communities through various projects for upliftment and empowerment.

She is very active in protecting the rights of the Mu’tamireen and Hujaaj, constantly fighting for their fair and just treatment. She loves cricket and was a scorekeeper for the Ottomans cricket club, while also assisting with mini cricket coaching at Primroses cricket club.

She has a passion for promoting sports, especially cricket, at grass roots levels, recognising its vital contribution to keeping our children off the streets, and building discipline and teamwork. She also loves swimming, reading and travelling. Even though Shameemah jokingly complains that Al Jama-ah leaves her no time for her favourite hobbies, her first love is her community, which she prioritises through her presence and visibility in the communities she whole-heartedly serves

HON SALIE IN PARLIAMENT

From May 2024 – May 2025, Advocate Shameemah Salie stood in as Al Jama-ah’s second MP in the National Assembly, on behalf of Councillor Ismail Moosa.

Moosa’ was required to resign as a Ward Councillor from the City of Johannesburg following the 2024 national elections, but the Party’s President Hon. Ganief Hendricks requested that he stay on for another year as councillor until the fulfillment of Al Jama-ah ward and governance commitments.

This is the work completed by Advocate MP Shameemah Salie during this time:

CONGRATULATIONS TO SHAMEEMAH SALIE

SHAMEEMAH SALIE APPOINTED AS AL JAMA-AHS SECOND MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT

Al Jama-ah Congratulates its second Member of Parliament who was sworn in earlier today: Al Jama-ah Party is pleased to announce the swearing in of its second Member of Parliament, Adv Shameemah Salie.

Adv Shameemah Salie was sworn in earlier today in the Speaker’s Boardroom at Parliament.

The party has now secured two Member of Parliament (MP) posts. The first post returned to the party’s leader, Hon Ganief Hendricks (who is now the newly appointed Deputy Minister of Social Development). Adv Shameemah Salie has taken up the second seat in Parliament and her position as councillor in the City of Cape Town will be filled by Adv. Yusuf Khan Dalwai.

Al Jama-ah extends its heartfelt congratulations to Member Salie and is confident that she would continue to be the party’s dissenting voice in Parliament.

FIRST SPEECH IN PARLIAMENT

Hon Adv. Salie’s Maiden speech as the MINI PLENARY on International Relations and Co-operation, 16 July 2024

” While promoting solidarity with the Palestinians’ liberation struggle, South Africa’s trades with Israel remains strong … amounting to almost 3 billion rand exported goods to this apartheid state; this is rather hypocritical!

AL JAMA-AH does not support a two-state solution; AL JAMA-AH supports a one state solution! We cannot claim ownership of land through a genocide

WE STAND IN SUPPORT

Shameemah Dollie Salie – I stand 200% in support of Advocate, Honorable Member of Parliament Shameemah Dollie Salie and Al Jama’ah in their firm stance against #cyberbullyingawareness political coercion, and the divisive tactics that threaten unity within our community.

It is clear that Al Jama’ah acted with integrity, refusing to be dictated to or pressured into decisions that do not align with their principles. The party made an independent and well-reasoned choice, demonstrating leadership and accountability to their constituents. Any attempt to misrepresent their position or threaten them into submission is not only unethical but also exposes the true intentions of those who seek to manipulate political narratives for their gain.

Unity within the Muslim community should never be sacrificed for personal or political agendas. As Muslims, we are commanded to uphold justice, respect, and mutual understanding. Attempting to strong-arm Al Jama’ah into a collective decision they were never a part of is a clear example of intimidation, which has no place in a democratic and ethical society.

Advocate Shameemah Dollie Salie’s response is principled, courageous, and a necessary reminder that we must resist efforts to create disunity. Al Jama’ah’s commitment to standing firm on their own strategy while respecting the cause at hand is commendable.

We will not be bullied. We will not be dictated to. And we will not allow political opportunists to create division for their own gain. Truth and justice must always prevail.

Public participation is a fundamental and integral part of good governance
Public has lost faith in public participation and see it as a tick box exercise where decisions has already been made by all levels of government and their voices are not heard nor are the petitions truly considered. This is an aspect we witness in COCT and has resulted in lack of public participation

Ensuring ward committee has presentation with values, skills, abilities and with passion to ensure commitment. It is due to lack of required skills, and passion and education provided that large amount of absenteeism occurs in wards and change of committee
We have high rate of unemployment, literacy and challenges faced by community hence importance of education on matters relevant to public participation

Education across board on aspects of matters for public participation is crucial. Education to public on matters that impact them in a language understood. Budget and processes many a time only later does public find out processes and it places extra burden on councillors due to lack of understanding. Ensuring that public participation takes a mixed form of digital and face to face

We have to utilise platforms accessible to residents and pull in assistance of leaders, whether mosques, churches in schools and traditional leaders. We during elections canvas door but yet we do not exercise the same passion when it comes to educating affected communities on decisions that affect them  Areas generally decided on whether it be a hall etc to often it is at a place or at time where residents are working
