Cllr. Adv. Salie Calls For Greater Opportunities For Youth

Cllr. Adv. Salie Calls For Greater Opportunities For Youth

Adv. Shameemah Salie continues her engagements across numerous communities, distributing Qurban, clothing, assisting with indigent grant applications, addressing service delivery concerns, and providing other forms of essential support. Equally important has been the opportunity to spend time with residents, listening to their concerns, challenges, and aspirations—from the youngest members of our communities to our elders.

One issue that has emerged consistently during these engagements is the deep desire among our youth to build better futures for themselves. Many young people have expressed a strong determination to further their education, acquire meaningful skills, secure employment, and contribute positively to society. They want the opportunity to support their families, uplift their communities, and become productive citizens.

Similarly, many elders have approached Adv. Salie seeking assistance in finding employment opportunities, not only for themselves but also for their children. The reality is not a lack of willingness to work. Rather, it is the devastating impact of high unemployment levels and the ever-increasing cost of living that continues to place immense strain on families across our country.

Despite these hardships, many young people remain committed to staying away from criminal activity, resisting negative influences, and pursuing a path of dignity and purpose. Their resilience, determination, and hope deserve recognition and support.

However, hope alone is not enough.

We urgently need meaningful investment in education, vocational training, apprenticeships, entrepreneurship programmes, and sustainable job creation initiatives. Government, the private sector, civil society, educational institutions, and community leaders must work together to create real pathways to opportunity and economic participation.

Our communities do not need empty promises; they need practical solutions and tangible outcomes. Every young person who gains access to education, skills development, or meaningful employment becomes a catalyst for positive change. Every opportunity created strengthens families, builds safer communities, and contributes to a more prosperous South Africa.

Our youth are ready to learn, work, innovate, and lead. The question is whether those entrusted with responsibility are prepared to create the opportunities they need to succeed.

We are failing far too many of our young people, and we must do better. Ensuring that our youth have access to opportunity is not merely a policy objective—it is a collective responsibility and a duty upon us all.
