MMC for Community Development Thapelo Amad, MMC for Development Planning Eunice Mgcina, Deputy Executive Mayor of Johannesburg Loyiso Masuku, and City Manager Dr Floyd Brink convened a high-level meeting with 136 building inspectors to deliberate on strengthened programmes aimed at combating lawlessness and corruption within the built environment.

The engagement focused on reinforcing compliance mechanisms, improving oversight, and ensuring stricter enforcement of municipal building regulations and by-laws. The meeting comes in the wake of a tragic building collapse that claimed nine lives.

Preliminary reports indicate that the structure was non-compliant with approved building plans and municipal by-laws. No plans had been submitted to the City, and the structure was reportedly constructed illegally.

City leadership emphasised the urgent need for accountability, stronger inspection protocols, and decisive action to prevent similar incidents in the future. The safety of residents and the integrity of the built environment remain a priority, with a renewed commitment to enforcing compliance and rooting out corruption in the sector.
