AL JAMA-AH calls on South African Parliamentarians to support the International Campaign for the release of Venezuelan Parliamentary Member, Cilia Flores Maduro

The South African Parliament has taken the lead to call for the immediate release of fellow Parliamentarian, Venezuelan Member of Parliament, Cilia Flores Maduro who were abducted along with her husband, President Nicolus Maduro when US military forces illegally invaded the country.

This follows Al Jama-ah’s Member of Parliament Hon Imraan Ismail Moosa clarion call to South African Members of Parliament to support the international campaign, #BringThemBack.  Moosa’s debate on, The role South Africa can play in advancing its human rights ethos by supporting the Global Campaign for the immediate release of Venezuelan Parliamentary Member, Cilia Flores Maduro, was presented at a Mini Plenary yesterday, (Thursday, 26 March 2026).

The Mini Plenary debate coincided with Flores and Maduro’s court appearance in a New York court. Moosa stated that the military operation by the United States inside Venezuela to capture Maduro and Flores carries profound human rights, legal and geopolitical implications. “The forcible abduction and transfer of sitting head of state further challenges established principles such as head-of-state immunity and non-intervention, setting a controversial precedent for extraterritorial enforcement,” he said.

South Africa’s support for the global campaign calling for the immediate release of Flores and Maduro can contribute to addressing human rights violations by reinforcing key principles such as “due process protection from arbitrary detention, and respect for political freedoms as enshrined in the Constitution of South Africa and international law.””

Al Jama-ah holds the view that it was wrong of the US by undermining the sovereignty of Venezuela and it should be called out for its military invasion which causes deaths and for atrocities committed in other countries.

The party’s call on South African MPs to support the global campaign, received support from Members of Parliament from the ANC, MK, the EFF and the Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation.
