WOMEN’S MONTH: Al-Jama-ah to Champion for rights of fenced in rural women in Paarl and to economically empower thousands women sugar cane growers in KwaZulu-Natal – ‘A Community Call to Empowerment: Building Resilient Economies for All’
Al Jama-ah Party is pursuing the human rights’ fight for seven families ‘fenced in’ on the Nantes farm in Paarl in the Drakenstein Municipality, Western Cape as part of several of its activities in honour of the thousands of women who marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria on 09 August 1956 in protest against the ‘dompass,’ a permit black South Africans had to carry during apartheid.
The party has instructed its legal representative to reopen the case of the seven Nantes families for the removal of the fence on the portion of land they live on. The fence was erected by the new farm owner and it denies access to private and emergency vehicles to access their portion of land.
The party’s Women’s Month activities are kicking off with ‘rescuing’ vast acres of sugar cane fields on the brink of extinction in Mtubatuba and surrounding areas in KwaZulu-Natal. This revival of the sugar cane fields will provide 3000 women sugar cane growers with sustainable livelihoods. The party’s Women’s Month activities are based on the “Community Call for Empowerment of Women” which is in line with the national theme: “Building Resilient Economies For All.”
Ensuring the dignity and comfort of South Africa’s Older Persons, the party’s leader, Hon Ganief Hendricks who is Deputy Minister of Social Development, has for the past two weeks been visiting SASSA offices in a bid to prevent the elderly and disabled people from having to endure long queues.
His intervention lead to SASSA officers nation-wide to agree to have an “Express Queue” to service those coming in for ‘Reviews.’ “The Express Queue must ensure that during Women’s Month specifically, that women be assisted speedily and that there should be no delays in paying their grants,” says Hendricks who is also a member of the Leader’s Forum of the Government of National Unity.
