NO EMBARGO
AL JAMA-AH rejects with contempt the demands made by the US ambassador for South Africa to scrap the broad-based black economic empowerment (B-BEEE) or to allow exemptions:
Al Jama-ah says it totally rejects the demands made by US ambassador to Pretoria, Leo Brent Bozell that Washington expects a foreign policy shift from South Africa (referring to South Africa’s relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran) and to scrap the broad-based black economic empowerment (B-BEEE) or to allow exemptions for US firms.
The Party says it was America’s Reverend Leon Sullivan, who was the forerunner of B-BEEE in South Africa and companies around the globe including Nestle, where its leader, Hon Ganief Hendricks worked. In 1977 Sullivan introduced seven principles on equal treatment of employees regardless of their race both within and outside of the workplace.
The following seven principles became known as “The Sullivan Principles:
1. Non-segregation of the races in all eating, comfort, and work facilities
2. Equal and fair employment practices for all employees
3. Equal pay for all employees doing equal or comparable work for the same period of time.
4. Initiation of and development of training programs that will prepare, in substantial numbers, blacks and other non-whites for supervisory, administrative, clerical, and technical jobs.
5. Increasing the number of blacks and other non-whites in management and supervisory positions.
6. Improving the quality of life for blacks and other non-whites outside the work environment in such areas as housing, transportation, school, recreation, and health facilities.
7. Working to eliminate laws and customs that impede social, economic, and political justice.
The Sullivan principles gained wide use in the US, especially during the disinvestment campaign in the 1980s against apartheid South Africa. “The ambassador’s position harms the legacy of Sullivan’s principles and that of American companies who supported it,” says Hendricks.
