A Life Built on Service
Adv. Shameemah Salie brings more than three decades of experience in law, public service, governance and community advocacy to the role of Executive Mayor.
But her story is about more than positions held – a lawyer, State Advocate, Family Advocate, City Councillor and Member of Parliament.
Her politics is rooted in something simpler – a belief that human dignity should not depend on race, religion, wealth, age, background or political affiliation.
Throughout that journey, one thing has remained constant: her commitment to people.

WHAT DOES SHE BRING TO THE TABLE
South Africa is dealing with enormous challenges – crime, unemployment, poverty, inequality, failing infrastructure, social division and communities that often feel that government is not listening. Against that reality, Adv. Salie’s approach is always:
Do what is right. Stand up for people. Listen before you speak. Act!
Not what politics says is right. WHAT IS RIGHT – 24/7!!
That means standing up for vulnerable people. It means advocating for women and children.
It means fighting for safer communities. It means creating opportunities for young people.
It means respecting our elders. And it means challenging injustice wherever it is found.
For Adv. Salie, service is not something you do when elections are approaching. It is who she is!

ADDRESSING CRIME:
Addressing crime requires more than structural interventions.
It demands collective accountability at every level—national, provincial, local government, and within communities themselves.
Law enforcement agencies must be adequately resourced and held accountable for effective policing, while government must prioritise socio-economic interventions that address the root causes of crime.
Equally important is the urgent need to strengthen preventative measures for young people.
Sustainable safety cannot be achieved without investing in youth development, education, mentorship, and accessible opportunities that steer vulnerable individuals away from criminal activity. Communities must be supported with robust safety nets that intervene before young lives are lost to violence or drawn into cycles of crime.
The fight against crime is a shared responsibility.Meaningful change will only be realised through active collaboration between government, civil society, religious leadership, and residents.
We call for ongoing engagement, transparency, and measurable outcomes to restore safety, dignity, and hope to our communities.
The time for unified, decisive action is now. Our communities cannot afford further loss of life, nor the normalisation of violence. Together, we must reclaim our streets and secure a safer future for all.
SUPPORT FOR VULNERABLE COMMUNITIES – ACCOUNTABILITY
One issue that has emerged consistently is the deep desire among our youth to build better futures for themselves. Many young people have expressed a strong determination to further their education, acquire meaningful skills, secure employment, and contribute positively to society. They want the opportunity to support their families, uplift their communities, and become productive citizens.
Hope alone is not enough.
We urgently need meaningful investment in education, vocational training, apprenticeships, entrepreneurship programmes, and sustainable job creation initiatives. Government, the private sector, civil society, educational institutions, and community leaders must work together to create real pathways to opportunity and economic participation.
Our communities do not need empty promises; they need practical solutions and tangible outcomes. Every young person who gains access to education, skills development, or meaningful employment becomes a catalyst for positive change. Every opportunity created strengthens families, builds safer communities, and contributes to a more prosperous South Africa.
We are failing far too many of our young people, and we must do better. Ensuring that our youth have access to opportunity is not merely a policy objective—it is a collective responsibility and a duty upon us all.
