On September 30th, Al Jama-ah hosted George Galloway and Yvonne Ridley in the Bo-Kaap –
bringing an international conversation on justice, human rights and the struggles facing communities directly to one of Cape Town’s historic neighbourhoods.
The engagement provided an opportunity for discussion around issues affecting South Africans and their communities, including gentrification and the pressure it places on long-established communities and their heritage.
Galloway has spent decades involved in political and social justice movements, while Ridley is an experienced journalist and author whose work has included extensive reporting on international conflict and human rights.
For Al Jama-ah, engagements such as these are about creating space for people, ideas and communities to be heard — and connecting local concerns with the wider conversations taking place nationally and internationally.
The Bo-Kaap engagement formed part of their wider visit to South Africa and the People Power Tour, with Palestine, human rights and international justice among the broader issues discussed.
