Despite the scorching 44°C heat in Paarl on Wednesday, 11 March, the spirit of community and generosity remained strong. Members of Al Jama-ah Drakenstein gathered outside the Masjid Ur Nur “Lappert Street” Mosque to distribute warm cups of haleem and fresh bread to those in the area.
While the temperature was unusually high, it certainly didn’t stop people from enjoying a comforting bowl of this traditional dish. Haleem, known for its rich flavour and nourishing ingredients, is often shared during times of reflection and community gatherings, making it a meaningful offering on the day.
Special care was taken to provide cups of haleem to 20 men observing i’tikaf at the mosque, ensuring that those dedicating their time to prayer and reflection were also supported with a warm meal.
As workers made their way home after a long day in the heat, many paused to accept a cup of haleem and a piece of bread. Their smiles and words of appreciation reflected the impact of small acts of kindness, especially during demanding weather conditions.
Moments like these highlight the importance of community service and compassion. Even on one of the hottest days in Paarl, the warmth of generosity proved that it’s never too hot for haleem when it’s shared with care.
