Adv Shameemah Salie, Member of Parliament is currently conducting an oversight visit in Northwest province.
There has been a growing concern over various sports, arts and culture facilities in South Africa giving rise to the Sports, Arts and culture oversight.
Incomplete buildings, lack of maintenance, abandoned buildings after millions spent.
In 2016/2017 national treasury introduced the MIG allocation with the purpose of accelerating provision, development and transformation of facilities for the most in need in our country to assist with development and to unlock economic growth. The total allocation of the MIG funding towards sports infrastructure and to unlock economic growth was 5%
Day 1 visit flowing from the oversight visit led the portfolio to Madidi Local Municipality and specifically the Madidi Multi purpose centre.
The facility was constructed in 2016/2017 with a budget of 10.4 million allocated.
The project is currently incomplete, the building is dilapidated and vandalized.
Sadly, neither the Mayor or MMC was present at the time of our visit and there has been a request for them to attend a 2pm stakeholders meeting. The Councillors of the municipality present noted that they do not know what the plan is surrounding the finalization of the building. Community members present noted they were not happy that they were not being provided answers and called out corruption happening surrounding the building.
Apparently, there is a resolution agreed to by the municipality surrounding the finalization of the building, but no one could advise on the resolution.
This is a developing story
UPDATE: Upon arrival at the oversight visit in Northwest province, Honourable Salie, seen alongside fellow members of the Sports and Culture Committee, was met by leaders in Madidi.
