Al Jama-ah has officially announced Adv. Shameemah Dollie Salie as its Executive Mayoral Candidate for the City of Cape Town — and the announcement took place exactly where the party believes leadership should be: among the people.
The announcement was followed by the formal signing-in of Adv. Salie as the party’s mayoral candidate.
For Adv. Salie, the choice of Bonteheuwel was deliberate. This was not about a lavish political event or a ceremony removed from the communities a mayor is elected to serve. It was about bringing the announcement to the people.
FROM BONTEHEUWEL TO THE MAYORAL CANDIDACY
Adv. Salie brings more than three decades of experience in law, governance, public service and community advocacy.
Her career has included serving as a State Advocate and working with the Office of the Family Advocate, dealing with matters involving family law, children, gender-based violence and vulnerable people. She has also served as a Member of Parliament and City Councillor and currently serves as an Al Jama-ah PR Councillor in the City of Cape Town.
Her political journey has remained closely connected to community issues — from service delivery and social development to safety, justice and the protection of vulnerable residents.
Now, she steps forward as Al Jama-ah’s candidate for the highest elected office in the City.
A MAYORAL CHAIN IS A RESPONSIBILITY
For Adv. Salie, the mayoral chain is not a symbol of status or privilege.
It represents responsibility, accountability and service.
That principle was at the heart of Friday’s announcement.
“Leadership must never be above the people. Leadership must be with the people.”
The signing-in therefore represented more than a formal step in the electoral process.
It marked a commitment to take that approach to leadership into the campaign and, if elected, into the administration of the City of Cape Town.

Al Jama-ah believes Cape Town needs leadership that listens to residents, understands the realities of its different communities and puts service and accountability at the centre of local government.
She is also contesting Ward 60, including Sybrand Park, where she resides.
From Bonteheuwel, where her own journey began, Adv. Salie now takes that journey forward — with a clear message about the kind of leadership she believes Cape Town deserves.
