SHAMEEMAH SALIE – CITY OF CAPE TOWN

Adv Shameemah Salie was born to parents Ebrahiem Dollie and Abeedah Mukaddam in 1974. The youngest of 6 children. The family initially lived in Bo Kaap. They were moved to Bonteheuwel, then to Mitchell’s Plain in 1979, and Wynberg in 1987.

Adv. Salie comes from a family who for generations have been familiar with and involved in the political arena and assisting with community work and initiatives.
She is married to Nathmi Salie and has 5 children.

Advocate Salie is a Gender-Based Violence activist She is passionate about the welfare of women, children, and seniors in the community and has from the onset of her career focused on matters impacting on woman and children. As well as empowerment and  education of victims.

Though cases she has dealt with are not limited to these matters, this is where her interests lay and continue to be focused on. From maintenance and domestic violence court to juvenile court. She specialized in the prosecution of sexual offense matters and Family law and Hague matters

Adv. Salie has been a public servant for many years in the Department of Justice and upon resignation from the Department of Justice 2015 to date she has continued to serve the communities through various projects of upliftment and empowerment.

The decision to enter the political arena was to be a voice for the community and to effect and ensure her responsibility towards beneficial change within the community.

She attended Portland’s Primary and Jamaica Primary and Woodlands Senior Secondary.

A Brief Overview of Al Jama-ah Party

Al Jama-ah, which translates to “The Community,” is a political party in South Africa founded in 2007. The party’s primary focus is on representing the interests of the Muslim community in the Western Cape and advocating for the rights and concerns of all citizens, particularly those from marginalized backgrounds. Al Jama-ah seeks to address socio-economic challenges, promote religious tolerance, and ensure a more inclusive political landscape.

  • Clean up day

Council duties

  • Perusal of agendas for monthly City meeting (approximately 5000 pages).
  • Perusal and input on Community and Health Agenda and Workshops, Subcouncil 11 Agendas and Activities.

Council report

  • Was advised in March to provide a monthly report on the input and outcome of the Council meeting.
  • Duly provided a detailed report on all items and outcomes thereof, for public consumption on the agenda
  • Matters on special agenda Al Jama-ah provided input surrounding concerns on irregular expenditure. In this part of the agenda, no recordings or videos were allowed.

Community and health Portfolio report

  • Actively participated in matters affecting communities relating to parks and recreation, homelessness, and the importance of creating a culture of reading and ensuring accessibility to all including those who are physically challenged.

  • During March to April 2022 on Radio 786 breakfast club. Engaging with community on various topics.

Heritage day

  • Actively participated in heritage day event in District 6 and assisted with pictures and live videos of events

Palestine

  • Constant awareness was created surrounding the atrocities in Palestine via social media posts and shares. Attended two Palestinian awareness events in Kromboom Rd held on Saturdays including on Heritage day.

Spar Cape Town Ramadaan and Lifestyle expo Branding

  • Assisted with items for marketing and designing of bags for Al Jama-ah to increase visible branding at the expo
  • Purchased 50 bags of my own which will be used to sign up members and to advertise the party via supporters
  • Assisted with advertising of the Al Jama-ah party, engaging and networking with supporters, and securing of contacts, and distribution of flyers and membership forms from Friday to Sunday.
  • Participated in a political cook-off representing Al Jama-ah

Mowbray Cemetery

  • As a board member and being on the community on health portfolio: Assisted with affidavits, updating of forms evaluating maintenance and upgrades in process at the cemetery. Interacting with members of the public in person, via social media, and telephonically.
  • The work done by Mowbray Cemetery has not gone unnoticed by the relevant portfolio and has been acknowledged on several occasions during meetings

Icare Children’s Foundation

  • As an ambassador for ICare Children’s Foundation: Assisted with the lease agreement and launch of the finalization of agreement in securing of premises heritage site South African Cape Corps Ex-Serviceman Silvertown. The site will be utilized for the upliftment of those in need, through skills development and education. Further, the site will be used as a hub for feeding schemes
  • Assisted with an appeal to the community for assistance of goods, in cash and kind for foster homes, orphanages, and Eid drive.
  • Have been actively collecting clothing for those in need and for situations of potential disasters.
  • Have further provided guidance on service delivery issues faced by trust of the relevant building

Bokamakerie walkabout event

  • Took the lead on the walkabout held on the 9th of April 2022. The walkabout is intended to assess the difficulties faced by the residents of Bokmakerie after several concerns were raised. Concerns of gangsterism, drug abuse, unemployment, crime, parks in a poor state, roads damaged, the difficulties faced by elderly and children due to poverty.
  • During this period leading up to the event: actively involved in the advertising of the event, interviews conducted and pictures secured for the advertising team.
  • Secured two pots of food for the event through Icare Children’s Foundation and personally contributed 100 packets of party packs on behalf of party.
  • Further contributed and gifted groceries to the family who will provide premises to host the event.

New Horizons

  • Distribution of clothing to those in need.
  • Engaged with members of the community surrounding service delivery issues.
  • Secured assistance of a supporter and newly signed up member Fatimah Dollie Morgan to assist in the arrangements towards mass iftaar for 16 April New
  • Contributed a pot of food and 100 packets of chips
  • We are taking steps in the right direction. Being active and visible in the community is very important, as is follow-up of matters. Visible branding of Al Jama-ah is important in that voters become more familiar with the brand and party. By engaging with our people on the ground and in their homes, we will truly become the voice of the people, especially when we allow them to speak and raise their concerns – indeed confidence in the party is built.
