AL JAMA-AH CALLS FOR A FULL INVESTIGATION INTO FATAL INCIDENT INVOLVING ETHEKWINI MUNICIPAL WATER TANKER
Al Jama-ah has noted with profound shock and sadness reports that the pedestrian involved in the widely circulated incident involving an eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality water tanker has succumbed to their injuries.
The video, which appears to show a municipal water tanker running over a pedestrian before allegedly leaving the scene without rendering assistance, has caused widespread public concern and deserves urgent attention from the relevant authorities.
Al Jama-ah calls upon the Executive Mayor of eThekwini to immediately institute a full, independent and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident. The investigation must establish the facts, determine whether municipal policies, road traffic laws and emergency response obligations were complied with, and ensure that anyone found to have acted negligently or unlawfully is held fully accountable.
The people of eThekwini have every right to expect that municipal employees and service providers uphold the highest standards of professionalism, responsibility and respect for human life. Public confidence can only be maintained when there is transparency, accountability and justice.
We further call on the municipality to cooperate fully with the South African Police Service and all relevant investigative authorities to ensure that justice is served without fear or favour.
At this time of immense grief, Al Jama-ah extends its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of the deceased. We pray that the Almighty grants the family strength and patience during this painful time, and affords them comfort as they seek justice.
Al Jama-ah will continue to monitor developments closely and expects the municipality to keep the public informed of the progress and outcome of the investigation.
