On Sunday, 4 October, Al Jama-ah Councillor Thapelo Amad, Member of the Mayoral Committee, joined 15,000 participants in the SPAR Women’s Race in solidarity with victims of gender-based violence (GBV), femicide and cancer.

The 10km race brought participants together to honour women, raise awareness, remember those affected by violence and cancer, and renew the call for safer communities where women are supported, protected and valued.

Creating safer communities also means ensuring that public parks, open spaces and recreational facilities are accessible, welcoming and safe for everyone. Women and children should be able to move freely, enjoy public spaces and participate in community life without fear.

Under the banner of #CelebrateHer, the race served as a reminder that celebrating women must go hand in hand with protecting their safety, dignity and right to live free from violence.

Standing in solidarity is important. Turning that solidarity into sustained awareness, safer neighbourhoods and meaningful action is just as essential.

Celebrate Her. Stand in solidarity. Build safer, more liveable communities.
