Advocate Shameemah Salie attended an event on the 8th March in Commemoration of International Women’s Day.
On this International Women’s Day, we honour the courage, compassion, and leadership of women across the world who continue to nurture communities while resisting injustice.
This sadly is not a day of celebration but indeed is a day of mourning. We mourn the pain and heartache caused by criminals who are intent on conflict, war, genocide, crime, colonisation and imperialism
The ones intent on destruction of humanity. Where theft of land and resources is common practice.
From South Africa to Cuba, Palestine to Iran, from the Democratic Republic of the Congo to Lebanon, to Yemen and the list goes on around the women stand at the forefront of struggle and survival. They carry the burdens of war, genocide, poverty, displacement, sexual abuse and inequality — yet they remain the pillars of care, resilience, and leadership within their societies.
In South Africa, women continue the legacy of those who fought apartheid and built democracy, while still confronting the painful realities of gender-based violence, crime, unemployment, lack of basic rights and inequality. Across the world, women in conflict zones hold families together, lead humanitarian efforts, protect culture and identity, and continue to speak truth to power.
Today we recognize resistance is not only found in protest, but in nurturing life, protecting communities, and building a more just and accountable world.
We recognise that patriarchy needs to be dismantled rigid societal norms that has restricted women has created an imbalance and suffering.
Women are not only survivors — they are leaders, healers, educators, and builders of peace.
We call on international mobilisation and solidarity of women to fight injustice, inequality and to push forward as we continue to stand with women everywhere who struggle for dignity, justice, and humanity.
