A Johannesburg initiative is putting fruit trees into community yards to strengthen food security and create greener neighbourhoods.
Cllr Thapelo Amad, responsible for City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ), is supporting a community-based Fruit Tree Project that distributes and plants fruit trees in homes and historically marginalised communities across Johannesburg.
The project has a simple but meaningful goal: to help communities grow their own food while making Johannesburg greener and more sustainable.
Through seasonal campaigns and Arbor Month activities, fruit trees including citrus, peach and apple varieties are being introduced into communities such as Orange Farm, Cosmo City, Lufhereng, Doornkop, Braamfischerville and Protea Glen.
Planting a fruit tree is a small action with a long-term benefit. As the trees mature, they can provide fresh fruit for households, contribute to household food security and add much-needed greenery to urban communities.
The initiative reflects a practical approach to community development — investing in neighbourhoods today while creating resources that can benefit families for years to come.
