Al Jama-ah’s Cllr Thapelo Amad joined civil society organisations in honouring the women whose courage and sacrifice helped shape South Africa’s democracy.

On 2 August 2026, Cllr Thapelo Amad, an Al Jama-ah member and member of the Johannesburg Mayoral Committee, joined the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation and Sophie Williams de Bruyn Foundation for a programme commemorating the 70th anniversary of the historic women’s march and celebrating the legacy of South Africa’s women of fortitude.

The programme included wreath-laying ceremonies at Avalon Cemetery in Soweto, where tributes were paid at the graves of struggle icons Lilian Ngoyi and Helen Joseph, followed by a visit to Newclare Cemetery to honour Rahima Moosa and other women who played significant roles in South Africa’s liberation struggle.

The commemoration provided an opportunity to reflect on the courage, leadership and sacrifices of these women, while recognising the responsibility of today’s leaders to carry their legacy forward through continued service to communities and the country.
