Al Jama-ah Councillor and MMC for Community Development in Johannesburg, Cllr Thapelo Amad, joined Footprint Hospice, Restoring Vision, Gift of the Givers Foundation and the Seth Mazibuko Foundation for a community vision-care initiative in Orlando, Soweto.

The initiative provided senior citizens with eye testing and 200 pairs of spectacles, helping residents address a basic but often overlooked need that can have a significant impact on independence and quality of life.

For many older people, difficulty seeing clearly can make everyday tasks more challenging, from reading and moving around safely to managing medication and remaining independent.

The initiative reflects the importance of community-based support that responds to practical needs and restores dignity, particularly for older and vulnerable residents.

For Al Jama-ah, community development is about more than programmes and policy. It is about being present in communities, identifying needs and working with partners to make a tangible difference in people’s lives.
